Sarah

* * *

Dressed in a long black skirt, flowery long sleeve blouse, and a light jacket, Sarah sat outside the library during her lunch break. It was one of those September days the weather was nice and comfortable, with a dash of approaching fall. Inside her, the story was different. She was miserable.

She couldn’t believe she’d fallen in love in such a short time, but she had. Trevor Leigh had been a perfect gentleman with his square jaw and rugged good looks, and he’d kept to their agreement-he’d abandoned her. Not in the literal sense.

He didn’t leave her to fend for herself and stopped her from making a critical mistake. Who was she kidding? Her plan to run to New York was half-baked.

Granted, she was running for her life, but it could have easily turned into a disaster. Trevor had convinced her to come to Beaver Run. But since the day after he’d bought her groceries, he hasn’t come to see her.

Was he mad at her? The police station was right there. He could have strolled over during a coffee break or something. She looked in the direction of the post office and saw the other deputy sheriff, Rock. No, Stone, Sam Stone. It looked like he was taking a selfie. He waved. Sarah waved back.

She must tell Trevor about the money and Drake.

Sarah sighed. Since coming to Beaver Run, things had looked so normal that she’d forgotten about him. He was still a clear and present danger to her.

Her thoughts went back to Trevor. Did he care or just needed a fuck buddy? He must feel something. After all, he’d wanted to introduce her to his family. Sarah had said no, it wasn’t necessary…yet.

She didn’t want to be asked straightforward questions she couldn’t answer effectively, like How long have you known each other? Oh, less than two weeks. How did you meet? I fell into his lap on the train, and he fucked my brains out. It was lust at first sight. You don’t want to introduce someone you only sleep with to your family.

As she remembered the train ride, her girly parts purred. She wanted him, all of him.

But did he love her? Doubt crept into Sarah’s mind. She must see him. There was no more room for pretense. She would tell him about the money and what she felt for him. There was no other way to do it. As soon as she was done with work, she’d go to him.

Work!

Sarah had almost daydreamed her lunch break away. “Shit.” She was supposed to help the librarian finish removing old labels from books and putting new ones on them before shelving them in a new section.

Sarah went back. She skipped her fifteen-minute afternoon break to ensure the work was finished by the end of her shift. Reading labels and focusing so that the right title went on the right book kept her mind busy and free of thoughts about Trevor.

At a point, she felt like she was in
